The Business Impact of Texting and Driving: Business Owners Take Heed

Texting and Driving

Texting and driving has become a massive problem and it’s only getting worse. As more people buy smartphones and more functionality is added to our cars, there will inevitably be less focus on driving.  If you search Google for accidents involving texting and driving, you will come across hundreds of tragic stories.  For example, a 47 year old woman who ran a red light and struck an SUV carrying a family of four, killing a 4 year old girl and her 35 year old mother.  Then there’s a 19 year old who caused another car to spin out of control, killing two people (a 38 year old man and a 50 year old man).  Unfortunately, there are many more texting and driving stories that ended just as badly.

The Business Impact of Texting and Driving

I think everyone understands that you can kill yourself or other people when texting and driving, and that’s obviously a worst case scenario.  But, even if you end up making it through an accident relatively unscathed, there is still another issue to worry about.  What if you were texting about your business, projects, clients, etc. while driving?  Are you really out of the woods?  Can your business be liable?  Can you also be personally liable?  How about criminal charges?  And if you own a business, do you have a policy in place that employees and contractors sign?  Are you enforcing that policy?

These are all great questions, and there are answers.  But you’ll have to head over to Search Engine Journal to read more.  That’s where you’ll find my latest post titled How Texting and Driving Can Destroy Your Business.  In the post, I provide several real-word texting and driving scenarios and then I had Mike Pisauro, a lawyer from Princeton, provide his legal view of each scenario.

So, if you’re a consultant, run your own business, or are an executive at a company, head over to Search Engine Journal to read my latest post.  Grab a cup of coffee while you’re at it, it’s a pretty lengthy post.  :)
