@Craig, I'm glad you found my post! I don't have experience with the Samsung Wave, but it sounds like a very similar problem to what I had (and what many others are having with Galaxy phones). I would probably try mass storage mode and transfer the files. Then reformat the internal sd card to see if that solution works for you. If it does, then you could go back and transfer the files back onto your phone. I'm sorry to hear about the problem with your phone, but it's not isolated (to say the least). Thanks again.

@RJizzle, Thanks for your comment. I'm assuming you have a US-based phone. If you do, then my guess is that you'll have to wait until Samsung releases the new build of Samsung Kies (which they said they are currently working on). You can read the update at the beginning of this post to learn more.

In the short-term, you can connect your Captivate to your computer in "mass storage mode" to transfer files. You can also try some apps that facilitate the syncing of Outlook contacts and calendar (if that's also what you are trying to do). I plan on posting ongoing updates to this post in order to keep everyone up to speed on the latest from Samsung. I hope this helps!

I did everything you said, and it worked great! after i installed music and movies, everything worked fine! But when i went back to connect my captivate it says connecting to device and never connects. My captivate just flashes from the initializing screen to my home screen and back again. Do you think i have to format again? Any suggestions would be great!

Hi, came across your blog and problem while searching for a solution to a temporary samsung phone i have.
I say temporary as i just signed up here in canada with a sony x10 i got that is a lemon....the only other android that was good quality is not out yet..two more weeks..it is the captivate...so i am waiting.
but i have your issue with the temporary phone they gave me to use in place of sony lemon and it is a samsung wave...released earlier this yr..i too downloaded the kies software..
..and like one earlier poster i had it work flawlessly the first time and it detected my device and allowed me to use outlook to sync contacts add media to phone etc..
..then when i went to sync it the second time...uh oh :(
didnt find it....so off i went to search and found so many similar problems. i have added so much to the phone i would hate to do the sd thing and lose it all.
I dont know if your mass storage thingy would work to let me transfer stuff off and back on to reformat..assuming your solution for captivate is same...which it sounds like.

sigh...not a complete newb...but not that techie either ...sigh....!

@Clara, thanks for stopping by. Have you been able to connect your Captivate to your computer in "mass storage mode"? Once you do, you should be able to see the folders on your phone (containing files). You can transfer those files to your hard drive just like you would via any other drive. One note, once you connect your phone, you'll need to mount the phone (via tapping on the top notification bar on your phone and selecting USB). I hope that helps.

@eXtorian, thanks for the comment, and you're not alone! Although it seems you had no problems for a while with Kies (and my post was about just starting out with it once you buy a new Captivate). Were you able to fix the problem? I would have a hard time formatting my internal sd card too if I had a lot of files on it already... Thanks again.

Thanks, I have been trying and trying to figure that out. But my question now is, I have taken quite a few pics and some videos which I have been trying to figure out how to save them to my Mini SD Card. This was my last idea, So I could load all my stuff to the computer, or in this case I don't lose them. I am learning as I go, do you have
Any helpful advise for an EXTREMELY NEW SMART PHONE USER!

Thanks again

Wow! I thought it was only me that had the techo MTP crashing/restarting problem.

You see, MTP and Kies used to work find on my SGS, but then one day it stopped. Maybe it was after I took some pictures, maybe it was after I installed some ringtones, and maybe that's important later...

Looking at the logcat logs from the phone show MTP scanning all of the media on the internal SD card, with an error for each one, although this doesn't appear to be fatal. The fatal error seems to be that it's expecting another folder that it can't find. The error message said something like "Stack corruption detected" and mentions it was expecting another folder.

Formatting the internal SD card would erase all files from the SD card and hence it won't be getting these errors related to the files on it.

Thanks Frank. I'm glad you found my post helpful. I totally understand why you wouldn't want to format the internal sd card. I didn't have much on it (since it was new), so I was ok with formatting it. I'm eager for the new build of Kies to be released. It will make syncing much easier (for contacts, calender, video, photos, etc.)

Great article! Good resolution. I gave up on Kies early on once I realized it wasn't supported here in the U.S. I wish I would have found this article last month when I got my Captivate. I had the same problems with Kies in trying to connect it. I don't think I'm willing to go through the format process, since I have a LOT of stuff on there that hasn't been backed up yet. Maybe in the near future.
